Social isolation and hearing loss

It is common to think of hearing loss only as a reduction in our ability to understand speech. One of the biggest challenges for hearing care professionals is helping patients regain a sense of everyday life.

How hearing loss affects everyday life

Hearing loss affects more than hearing; it can also affect thinking and mood. People may become irritable with those around them because they cannot understand what is being said. One of the most difficult effects can be social isolation.

Hearing loss and social isolation

Stopping group activities, preferring to stay at home or not taking part in conversations can all be linked to isolation associated with untreated hearing loss.

It is estimated that by 2030, one in four people will have some form of hearing problem, which may be associated in some cases with psychological difficulties.

When to seek hearing support

If you think you may have a hearing problem, please do not ignore it. Early detection and treatment are important.
